A Lazy Reader's Review of "Belladonna" by Adalyn Grace
Synopsis
Orphaned as a baby, nineteen-year-old Signa has been raised by a string of guardians, each one more interested in her wealth than her well-being – and each has bet an untimely end. Her remaining relatives are the elusive Hawthornes, an eccentric family living at Thorn Grove, and estate both glittering for control of the family's waning reputation, and his daughter suffers from a mysterious illness. But when their mother's restless spirit appears claiming she was poisoned, Sign realizes that the family she depends on could be in grave danger and enlists the help of a surly stable boy to hunt down the killer.
However, Signa's best chance of uncovering the murderer is an alliance with Death himself, a fascinating dangerous shadow who has never been far from her side. Though he's made her life a living hell, Death shows Signa that their growing connection may be more powerful – and more irresistible – than she ever dared imagine.
Review
First read/review of 2025!~ I'm really excited for this year for many reasons. The first being I got a new job that I'm super stoked about. And the second being all of the cool books I'll get to read. It took me a while to read this book because the transition back into the work-force took a lot out of me. But I finished! Now, onto the review.
Adalyn Grace's Belladonna is a lush, gothic tale that intertwines mystery, romance, and the supernatural in a way that kept me enthralled throughout the story. Its atmospheric setting, paired with vivid prose, makes for a highly immersive read. While I found some aspects slightly uneven, this book delivered an engaging experience that earned it four out of five stars.
One of the most compelling aspects of Belladonna is its protagonist, Signa Farrow. As an orphan raised under a series of negligent or opportunistic guardians, Signa's journey toward self-discovery and empowerment is both poignant and inspiring. She is a character who straddles the line between vulnerability and strength, making her easy to root for. Though, there were times where her stubbornness caused me much stress. Her evolving sense of agency and the determination to take control of her deestiny are beautifully illustrated throughout the novel.
The character of Death is another standout, serving as both a literal figure and a profound metaphor, In many way, Death embodies Signa's yearning for freedom and autonomy. While their dynamic initially carries an air of foreboding, it grows into a nuanced relationship that challenges Signa to confront her fears and embrace her individuality. Death's presence is a stark reminder of life's fleeting nature, and his influence pushes signa to seize control of her choices rather than allowing other to dictate her path. Their connection adds a layer of complexity to the story, blending the macabre with a surprisingly tender emotional depth.
The book's pacing occasionally falters, particularly in the middle sections, where the intrigue of the murder mystery plot could have been tightened to maintain momentum. However, the story redeems itself with a satisfying conclusion that ties together the threads of romance, mystery, and self-empowerment.
Overall, Belladonna is a captivating read for fans of gothic fiction and romantic fantasy. Adalyn Grace has crafted a world brimming with dark beauty and characters who linger in your thought long afer you've turned the final page. It's a story that celebrates the power of choice and the courage to defy societal expectation and I'm so excited to pick up the second book.

Favorite Quote: "You are not cursed – you are a reaper. You are the night incarnate, the ferrier of souls. You are the bridge between the living and the dead – a caged bird that's ready to fly. So spread your wings, Signa Farrow, because you are limitless. Spread your wings, and oh, how we'll fly." ~ pg. 373
