Review

Heather Dixon Wallwork's The Enchanted Sonata is a whimsical retelling of The Nutcracker blended with a dash of The Pied Piper. While it offers a magical premise and enchanting moments, it ultimately falls short of its full potential, leaving me with mixed feelings.

The story follows Clara, a talented pianist who is transported to a fantastical land where music holds a powerful magic. She finds herself caught up in a quest to save the kingdom from an evil enchantment, all while grappling her own dreams and desires. Wallwork's prose shines when describing the musical magic (a magic system that I absolutely loved) – her writing often feels lyrical, evoking the beauty of melodies and the wonder of the world she's created.

However, the novel's pacing felt uneven. The initial setup and world-building are captivating, but the middle drags, and some plot developments felt rushed and under-explored. The characters, while likable, lacked the depth needed to fully invest in their journeys. Clara's growth as a protagonist is commendable, but her romantic arc felt predictable and somewhat forced forced.

What truly stood out were the vivid descriptions and creative reimagining of classic fairy tale elements. The magic system centered around music was unique and intriguing, offering a fresh take on a familiar story. Unfortunately, the secondary characters and their subplots didn't receive the attention they deserved, leaving parts of the story feeling hollow.

Overall, The Enchanted Sonata is a charming read that will appeal to fans of whimsical fantasy and fairy tale retellings. While it didn't quite strike the perfect chord (no pun intended) for me, it's a book with undeniable heart and a touch of magic.

It took me a really long time to read this book because, unfortunately, life has caught up with me. I started working and I've been coming home super tired and on my days off, I have no motivation but to do anything but doom scroll. I've decided to really commit to making time for my hobbies in the new year as one of my resolutions.
