A Lazy Reader's Review of "The Dream Thieves" by Maggie Stiefvater

Synopsis

Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after . . .

Review

Ms. Stiefvater, you've done it again girl. Another banger from that beautiful mind of yours. Let's get into it.

Right off that bat, I fell back in love with this group of characters. Each of them so diverse and likeable. This book was meant to serve more as a device to drive character development rather than the overarching plot. We learn a lot about the supernatural abilities of Ronan and Adam, the tense relationship between Adam and Blue, as well as the brittle friendship of Adam and Gansey.

Boy, Adam is going through it in this book.

This book also followed a similar path as the first book. There is an enemy that knows the group somewhat intimately whose point of view we get to see. However, this enemy felt more tense and real. Like, The Gray Man is incredibly dangerous and any time he interacted with the other characters, like Blue's mother, I was so tense and hoped that he wouldn't do anything to harm them because it's not something he's above doing in order to complete the job he was assigned. But, it was also interesting to see his development as the story progressed. He wasn't completely without morals and there were things he was unwilling to compromise on despite his profession as a hitman.

Overall, I think this book deserved the 4-star rating I gave it because the character work was just stellar and I find myself really loving Stiefvater's writing. I think she's great at writing Young Adult Fiction without it coming off as juvenile. Her characters are flawed and 4-dimensional Her prose and imagery are also incredibly well done. I cannot wait to pick up the third book.
