A Lazy Reader's Review of "Archer's Voice" by Mia Sheridan

 Synopsis

When Bree Prescott arrives in the sleepy, lakeside town of Pelion, Main, she hopes against hope that this is the place where she will finally find the peace she so desperately seeks. On her first day there, her life collides with Archer Hale, an isolated man who holds a secret agony of his own. A man no one else sees.

Archer's Voice is the story of a woman chained to the memory of one horrifying night and the man whose love is the key to her freedom. It is the story of a silent man who lives with an excruciating wound and the woman who helps him find his voice. It is the story of suffering, fate, and the transformative power of love.

Review

I had had somewhat high hopes for this book. The synopsis was quite interesting to me and I thought that, finally, I had found a romance book that would push the boundaries. Considering the fact that the male love interest has a disability, him being mute, I thought it was the perfect opportunity for this to occur. Alas, I was wrong. This book was just so mid. So incredibly mid and fell short in so many places.

To begin, I thought the dynamic between Bree and Archer were off to say the least. There were several times in which I felt like Bree was infantilizing Archer because he was mute. Calling him her "sweet mute boy" is honestly the stuff of nightmares in my opinion. I also was not into the insta-love dynamic that the two of them seemed to have. How on earth was Bree able to garner Archer's trust so easily considering that this man spent several years of his life in seclusion and completed isolated from other people? Seems a little unrealistic if you ask me.

The pacing of this book was also so incredibly awkward. I have no other way of describing it other than calling it "awkward". It honestly felt like this book was, at times, "stalling"? I'm not sure if this makes any sense, but I felt like there were certain scenes added just so there were words on the pages. None of them offered anything in regards to character development or the furthering of the plot. And, this is perhaps one of my biggest gripes with the book, the dialogue was, at times, incredibly cringe worthy and hard to read. I imagined someone actually saying these words out loud and immediately got the ick, to say the least.

The smut was decent, I must admit. Though, I don't normally read romance books in the hopes that there are sex scenes, I am no opposed to them. But, I felt that so much of the scenes that included were there just for there to be sex scenes. There was smut just for the sake of there being smut. And it was getting on my nerves.

Overall, I think this book is fine. It's just fine. Would I read it again, absolutely not. And I'm glad I didn't purchase a physical copy. Big thanks to Reddit for providing me with a free pdf of this book because lord knows if I wasn't able to find a free version of this book (this was before I had discovered Libby) my efforts would have ended there.
